Considerations Before You Ride in Slovakia
You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you want to hire. The required entitlement depends on the vehicle’s engine size and power, so check your licence before choosing your scooter.
For UK travellers, a UK photocard driving licence can be used in Slovakia for visits of up to six months. You do not normally need an International Driving Permit if you have a UK photocard licence.
Rental companies can set their own requirements, including minimum ages and how long you must have held your licence, so always check the conditions for your chosen scooter before booking.

Yes. Lower-powered scooters and mopeds should not be ridden on motorways, and access to some faster roads may also be restricted depending on the type and capability of the vehicle.
In towns and cities, watch for pedestrian zones, restricted-access streets and local traffic restrictions, particularly around historic centres. Scooters should not be ridden on pavements or cycle paths unless signs specifically permit it.
If you head into Slovakia’s mountainous areas, some roads can also be seasonal or temporarily closed because of snow, weather or road conditions, so check your route before longer journeys.

A protective helmet is compulsory when riding a scooter, moped or motorcycle in Slovakia. This applies to both the rider and any passenger.
Other protective clothing such as gloves, a riding jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly if you plan to explore beyond Bratislava or ride longer distances.
Whether a helmet is supplied depends on the rental company. Some include one with the scooter while others may charge separately, so check your booking carefully and remember to arrange a second helmet if carrying a passenger.

Yes. The minimum legal age depends on the type and power of the scooter or motorcycle you want to ride. Different licence categories apply to mopeds, light motorcycles and more powerful machines.
Being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you can hire one. Rental companies often set higher minimum ages and may require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period.
Always check the age and licence requirements for your chosen scooter before booking, as these can vary between rental companies.

If you are visiting from the UK and have a UK photocard driving licence, you do not normally need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive or ride in Slovakia.
You should carry your UK driving licence with you and make sure it includes the correct entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire.
If you have an older paper licence or a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, different requirements may apply, so check the latest guidance before travelling.
Yes. In Slovakia, you ride on the right-hand side of the road, and dipped headlights should be used while riding, including during the daytime.
Slovakia has a zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving, so do not drink any alcohol before riding. Speed limits are clearly signposted and can vary depending on the road and type of vehicle.
Take extra care on rural and mountain roads, where road conditions, weather and visibility can change quickly. Some main roads are single carriageway, so be particularly cautious when overtaking.

Your rental should include the basic insurance required for the scooter to be legally used on the road, but the exact level of protection can vary between rental companies.
Basic cover does not necessarily include damage to the rental scooter, theft or every type of accident. You may still be responsible for an excess or for certain types of damage.
Check exactly what insurance is included, the amount of any excess and what exclusions apply before booking. Additional insurance may sometimes be available if you want greater protection.
Possibly. Depending on the rental company, you may pay extra for additional insurance, passenger helmets, accessories, extra riders or delivery and collection.
Other potential charges include additional mileage, late returns, missing fuel or damage that is not covered by the insurance included with your rental.
A refundable security deposit may also be required when collecting the scooter, so check the rental conditions carefully before booking.
