Considerations Before You Ride in Indonesia
To ride a scooter or motorcycle legally in Indonesia, you need a valid driving licence that covers the type of motorcycle you are riding, together with the appropriate International Driving Permit (IDP). A UK driving licence on its own is not sufficient for visitors.
For UK travellers, Indonesia requires a 1968 International Driving Permit. You should carry both your original UK driving licence and your IDP while riding. Importantly, the IDP does not give you additional motorcycle entitlement, so your UK licence must already entitle you to ride the class of scooter or motorcycle you hire.
Do not assume that being able to rent a scooter means you are legally entitled to ride it. Before hiring, check that your licence, IDP and travel insurance all cover the vehicle you intend to use. UK government travel advice specifically recommends checking your licence and insurance before riding or hiring any vehicle in Indonesia.

Sometimes, but always check with the rental company first. Indonesia has an extensive vehicle-ferry network, and motorcycles are routinely carried between islands. The state ferry operator ASDP specifically provides vehicle categories for motorcycles below 500cc and motorcycles of 500cc or more.
However, whether you can take a rental scooter is determined by your rental agreement. Some rental companies restrict vehicles to a particular island or require permission before taking them on a ferry. You should therefore confirm that inter-island travel is allowed and that your insurance remains valid before booking a crossing.
Vehicle and passenger details may also be checked when boarding. ASDP states that ferry operators verify ticket, identity and vehicle-manifest information, so carry your rental documentation and identification with you.
For routes, ports and current ferry information, check the official ASDP Indonesia Ferry website before travelling. Services can occasionally be altered or suspended, including around major events such as Nyepi in Bali.
Indonesian law requires both the rider and passenger to wear a helmet meeting Indonesia’s SNI safety standard when travelling by motorcycle or scooter. Failure to wear the required helmet can result in enforcement and a fine.
Other protective clothing such as jackets, gloves, long trousers and closed footwear is sensible but is not subject to the same statutory requirement as the helmet. UK government travel advice specifically recommends wearing a helmet in good condition when riding in Indonesia and highlights the number of serious motorcycle accidents, particularly in Bali.
Helmets are commonly available with rental scooters, but do not assume that suitable protective equipment is included. Check what your rental provides before booking and inspect the helmet for fit and condition before setting off.

Yes. Indonesian law sets minimum ages for motorcycle licences. The Indonesian National Police currently lists 17 years for motorcycles up to 250cc, 18 for 250–500cc and 19 for motorcycles over 500cc.
However, this does not mean every rental company will hire to someone of those ages. Rental operators and their insurers can impose their own minimum-age requirements, which may be higher and can vary according to the type or engine size of the scooter or motorcycle.
Visitors should therefore check the rental company’s age conditions before booking and make sure their own driving licence covers the vehicle being hired. For UK travellers, the age and motorcycle categories on your UK licence also matter.

Yes. UK visitors planning to ride in Indonesia should obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP). UK government guidance lists Indonesia as requiring the 1968 IDP and advises travellers to carry their valid UK driving licence as well.
Your IDP does not give you extra motorcycle entitlement. You must already hold the appropriate licence for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride. Before hiring, also check that your travel insurance covers you for that vehicle.

Yes. Traffic drives on the left in Indonesia, and riders should obey local signs and road markings even where local traffic appears less disciplined. Indonesian police also remind riders that overtaking should normally be carried out on the right and that riding against the direction of traffic is illegal.
Motorcycles are generally not permitted on Indonesian toll roads, except where a physically separated motorcycle lane is specifically provided, so do not assume a route suggested for cars is suitable for a scooter. Both rider and passenger must also wear an approved SNI-standard helmet.
Use your indicators when turning or making a U-turn, follow traffic lights and signs, and ride defensively. UK government advice warns that traffic discipline can be poor and highlights a significant number of serious and fatal motorcycle accidents, particularly in Bali.

Do not assume that it is. Insurance included with a rental scooter can vary by provider, and any cover supplied with the vehicle may be limited. Before booking, check the rental agreement carefully to understand what is included, particularly damage, theft, excess and third-party liability cover.
You should also have appropriate travel insurance that specifically covers riding the type and engine size of scooter or motorcycle you hire. UK government advice for Indonesia tells travellers to check with their travel insurer that they are covered before riding or hiring a vehicle.
Standard travel insurance does not necessarily cover scooters or mopeds. The FCDO notes that their use or hire is not usually covered by standard policies, and you may need additional or specialist cover. Riding without the correct licence or outside your policy conditions can also leave you uninsured.

Possibly. The price you initially see may not include every potential charge. Depending on the rental company and your booking, additional costs can include security deposits, fuel, delivery or collection, additional drivers, optional equipment, late returns and charges for damage or loss.
If you’re planning to take the scooter between islands, check whether the rental company permits this and whether additional fees or permissions apply. Ferry tickets and any associated transport costs will normally be separate from the scooter rental.
Before confirming your booking, check exactly what is included in the quoted price, the deposit required, the fuel and cancellation policies, and what could result in an additional charge. Keep a copy of the rental agreement and photograph the scooter when collecting and returning it so its condition is recorded.
