Considerations Before You Ride in Netherlands

You need a valid driving licence covering the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. In the Netherlands, an AM licence covers mopeds and low-powered scooters, while motorcycles require the appropriate A1, A2 or A category depending on their power and engine size.

An A1 licence covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW, while more powerful motorcycles require A2 or A entitlement. Your licence must include the appropriate entitlement for the vehicle you choose.

Visitors can use a valid foreign driving licence in the Netherlands, although rental companies may impose additional conditions such as a minimum age or requiring you to have held your licence for a certain period. Always check the requirements for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Yes. Mopeds and scooters cannot simply use every cycle path in the Netherlands. Depending on the vehicle and the road, you may need to use either the main carriageway or a designated combined cycle/moped path, so always follow the local signs rather than assuming a cycle lane is open to scooters.

Motorways and certain high-speed roads are also off-limits to mopeds and low-powered scooters. If you are hiring a more powerful motorcycle, different rules apply, so it is important to know which vehicle category you are riding.

There are additional restrictions in Amsterdam, where a zero-emission zone covers most of the built-up city for mopeds and scooters. Electric scooters can enter, while petrol models are subject to restrictions and transitional rules. There are also individual streets and areas where scooter access or parking is prohibited, so check signs carefully when exploring the city.

In the Netherlands, an approved motorcycle helmet is compulsory for riders and passengers on motorcycles, mopeds and most scooters. The helmet must be properly fastened while riding.

An exception applies to certain low-speed vehicles, such as some three- or four-wheeled mopeds fitted with seat belts, but this is unlikely to affect a typical scooter rental. Protective jackets, trousers, gloves and riding boots are not generally compulsory, although they are strongly recommended.

Whether a helmet is supplied depends on the individual rental company. Some include one helmet in the rental price, while others charge separately, and passenger helmets may also be an optional extra. Check exactly what safety equipment is included before booking.

Yes. In the Netherlands, you must be at least 16 to ride a moped or scooter requiring an AM licence. For motorcycles, the minimum age increases with the licence category: A1 from 18, A2 from 20, while access to unrestricted A-category motorcycles depends on your age and previous riding experience.

These are the legal minimum riding ages rather than guaranteed rental ages. Rental companies can set higher age limits and may also require you to have held the appropriate licence for a minimum period.

Always check the conditions for the particular scooter or motorcycle you want to hire, as age and experience requirements can vary between rental companies and vehicle types.

If you have a UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in the Netherlands as a visitor. You should carry your valid UK licence with you and it must include the appropriate entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride.

If you have an older paper driving licence, different requirements can apply and you may need an IDP. The Netherlands uses the 1968 IDP, so check the current requirements before travelling if you do not hold a UK photocard licence.

Rental companies can also set their own documentation requirements, so it is worth checking the conditions of your chosen rental before booking.

Yes. Traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road in the Netherlands. Dutch roads also have a huge number of cyclists, so take particular care at junctions and when crossing cycle lanes. Trams have priority in many situations, making extra awareness important when riding in cities such as Amsterdam.

Where you should ride depends on the type of scooter. Mopeds capable of up to 45 km/h may be required to use the carriageway or a designated combined cycle/moped path, while slower mopeds are generally subject to different rules. Always follow the local signs rather than automatically using a cycle path.

Using a handheld phone or other electronic device while riding is prohibited. Drink-driving laws also apply, with a lower alcohol limit for inexperienced riders. The safest option is not to drink at all before riding.

Yes. In the Netherlands, motor vehicles used on public roads must have third-party liability insurance, so a road-legal rental scooter should include the required basic cover.

However, basic third-party insurance primarily covers injury or damage you cause to other people or their property. It does not necessarily cover damage to the rental scooter itself, theft, vandalism or every type of accident.

Additional protection may be available through the rental company, often with an excess that you remain responsible for. Before booking, check exactly what insurance is included, the excess amount, whether theft and damage are covered and whether any exclusions apply.

There can be. The advertised rental price will normally cover the scooter and the standard items included in your booking, but additional charges may apply depending on the rental company and the options you choose.

These can include extra insurance, additional riders, extra helmets, delivery or collection, additional mileage, late returns or fuel charges. Some companies may also charge for accessories such as phone holders or luggage storage.

You may also be asked for a refundable security deposit when collecting the scooter. Check the rental conditions before booking so you know exactly what is included, what costs extra and how much deposit may be required.
