Considerations Before You Ride in Iceland

The licence you need depends on the type and power of scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride. In Iceland, an AM licence covers mopeds designed for speeds of up to 45 km/h, while A1 covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW. More powerful motorcycles require the appropriate A2 or A motorcycle entitlement.

A standard Category B car licence includes entitlement to ride an AM-category moped, but it does not automatically provide the motorcycle entitlement required for larger scooters or motorcycles.

Visitors should carry a valid driving licence with the correct entitlement for the vehicle they intend to hire. An International Driving Permit may also be required depending on where your licence was issued. Rental companies can apply additional minimum-age, driving-experience and documentation requirements.

Yes. Iceland’s road network includes routes that may be unsuitable or inaccessible to ordinary rental scooters. Highland F-roads can be extremely rough and may include loose gravel and unbridged river crossings. Official safety guidance states that some F-roads require large or specially modified 4×4 vehicles, making them inappropriate for normal scooters. Many F-roads are also closed for much of the year.

Off-road driving is strictly prohibited in Iceland. Riders must remain on recognised roads and tracks and should never ride across untouched terrain, even where it may appear passable. Road closures must also be obeyed; a closed road is closed to motorcycles as well as other vehicles.

Conditions can change quickly because of weather, snow, flooding or volcanic activity, so always check current road conditions before setting out. You should also check your rental agreement, as it may place additional restrictions on where a particular scooter or motorcycle can be ridden.

A recognised protective helmet is required by law when riding a motorcycle or motor scooter in Iceland. For Class II mopeds, Icelandic Transport Authority guidance also states that suitable protective clothing must be worn.

Official guidance recommends proper motorcycle clothing with impact protection, protective gloves and sturdy boots that support the ankles. Equipment should be suitable for Icelandic conditions, where cold, wind and rapidly changing weather can make appropriate riding gear particularly important.

Whether a helmet or other protective equipment is supplied with a rental varies between rental companies and vehicle types. Check exactly what is included before booking and arrange any additional protective clothing you may need.

Yes. Icelandic law sets minimum ages according to the category of scooter or motorcycle being ridden. The minimum age is 15 for AM-category mopeds, 17 for A1 motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW, 19 for A2, and generally 24 for an unrestricted Category A motorcycle. Category A can be obtained from age 21 in certain circumstances where the rider has held A2 entitlement for at least two years.

These are the legal minimum ages for riding and do not necessarily mean a rental company will hire a scooter to someone of that age. Rental companies can set higher minimum ages and may also require the rider to have held the appropriate licence for a minimum period. Always check the individual rental conditions before booking.

It depends on where your driving licence was issued. Visitors with a valid licence from an EEA country, the UK, Switzerland or Japan can use recognised foreign driving licences in Iceland, so an International Driving Permit is not normally required solely because the licence is foreign.

If your licence was issued elsewhere, requirements can vary. It is sensible to check before travelling whether an International Driving Permit or other supporting documentation is required for your licence. Your licence must also show the appropriate entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride.

An International Driving Permit is not a replacement for your original driving licence. Where one is required, it must be carried alongside the valid licence on which it is based.

Registered scooters and motorcycles used on Icelandic roads are subject to compulsory motor insurance requirements. However, the level of insurance included with a rental can vary, so you should check the terms of your chosen hire before booking.

Basic cover may not protect you against every type of loss or damage. Depending on the rental, you may be offered optional additional cover to reduce your financial liability for damage, theft or other incidents.

Always check what insurance is included, the excess you would have to pay, any exclusions that apply and whether riding on particular types of road could invalidate the cover.

There may be. In addition to the basic rental price, rental companies can charge separately for items such as additional insurance, extra equipment, additional riders, late returns or other optional services. Always check what is included in the quoted price before booking.

Iceland also introduced a kilometre-based road charge for motorcycles and mopeds from 1 January 2026. For a rental vehicle, responsibility for paying the government charge rests with the registered owner or keeper, but a rental company may account for road-related charges within its own rental pricing or terms.

Parking charges may also apply during your trip, depending on where you park. Check the rental terms carefully so you know which costs are included and which could be charged separately.
