Considerations Before You Ride in Kyrgyzstan

To ride a scooter or motorcycle in Kyrgyzstan, you need a valid driving licence that covers the appropriate category of vehicle. Make sure your licence includes motorcycle entitlement suitable for the engine size and type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire.

For UK visitors, a valid UK photocard driving licence can be used in Kyrgyzstan for stays of up to 30 days. For stays longer than 30 days, you need to carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) together with your UK driving licence. If you still hold a paper UK licence, different requirements can apply.

Rental companies can impose stricter conditions than the legal minimum. They may require an IDP even for shorter stays, a minimum period of riding experience or particular motorcycle entitlement, so check the conditions applying to your chosen vehicle before booking.

There is no general nationwide restriction preventing scooters or motorcycles from using Kyrgyzstan’s ordinary public roads. However, riders must obey local traffic signs and any temporary restrictions or road closures imposed by the authorities.

Extra care is needed when travelling into mountainous and remote areas. High mountain passes and roads can be temporarily closed or restricted because of snow, ice, landslides or other severe conditions, particularly during winter. Conditions can change quickly, so check that your intended route is open before setting out.

Border areas require particular caution. Areas close to the Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border can be subject to sudden movement restrictions and an increased security presence, and border crossings can close at short notice. Only use officially recognised crossings and follow instructions from local authorities.

Kyrgyzstan’s road rules require motorcycle riders and passengers to wear a properly fastened motorcycle helmet. You should therefore expect to wear a helmet whenever riding a scooter or motorcycle on public roads.

Other protective clothing such as gloves, a motorcycle jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly if you plan to ride outside the cities or on mountain roads. These items are sensible safety precautions but are not generally compulsory riding equipment under Kyrgyzstan’s national road rules.

Whether helmets or other protective equipment are supplied depends on the individual rental. Before booking, check whether a helmet is included for both the rider and any passenger, whether there is an additional charge and whether suitable sizes are available.

Yes. Kyrgyzstan has minimum legal ages for riding scooters and motorcycles. The A1 licence category, covering light motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW, is available from 16 years old. Category A motorcycle entitlement can also be obtained from 16 under Kyrgyzstan’s licensing rules.

However, the legal riding age is not necessarily the minimum age for hiring a scooter. Rental companies can impose their own higher minimum age and may require riders to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period.

If you are visiting Kyrgyzstan, check the rental conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking. Your age, licence entitlement, riding experience and the type of scooter or motorcycle can all affect whether you are eligible to hire it.

If you hold a UK photocard driving licence, you can use it in Kyrgyzstan for visits of up to 30 days without an International Driving Permit (IDP). Your licence must include the appropriate motorcycle entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride.

For stays of more than 30 days, UK visitors need a 1968 International Driving Permit together with their UK driving licence. An IDP accompanies your normal licence rather than replacing it and must be obtained before travelling.

Rental companies can impose stricter requirements than the national rules and may require an IDP even for shorter rentals. If you have a paper UK driving licence rather than a photocard licence, different requirements can also apply, so check before travelling.

Kyrgyzstan drives on the right-hand side of the road, so visitors from the UK should take particular care when approaching junctions, entering traffic and negotiating unfamiliar roads. Riders must obey local traffic signs and signals, and using a mobile phone while riding is prohibited.

Kyrgyzstan has a zero-tolerance approach to drink-driving. If alcohol is detected in your system, you can face a fine and have your driving licence revoked for a year. Avoid drinking any alcohol if you intend to ride.

Road conditions can vary considerably. Roads may be poorly lit or maintained, roadworks and damage are not always clearly marked, and snow can close roads outside Bishkek during winter. Mountain routes can also be affected by avalanches and landslides, so take extra care on longer journeys and check conditions before setting out.

Do not assume that all insurance is automatically included with a scooter hire in Kyrgyzstan. Motor vehicles used in Kyrgyzstan are subject to compulsory third-party liability insurance, but this protects against liability for injury or damage caused to other people and their property. It does not necessarily cover damage to or theft of the scooter you hire.

The insurance included with an individual rental will depend on the hire agreement. Additional protection against damage or theft may be included, offered as an optional extra or subject to an excess. You may also be required to provide a security deposit.

Before booking, check exactly what insurance is included, the amount of any excess or deposit, whether theft and accidental damage are covered and whether any exclusions apply. It is also worth checking your travel insurance, as some policies restrict or exclude cover when riding scooters or motorcycles.

There can be additional charges on top of the advertised scooter hire price, depending on the rental terms and the vehicle you choose. Always check exactly what is included in the quoted price before completing your booking.

Possible additional costs can include a security deposit, insurance excess or optional additional insurance, extra equipment, an additional rider, late-return charges and fees for extending the rental period. Some rentals may also have mileage limits, with an additional charge if you exceed the agreed allowance.

The amount and type of additional charges vary between rentals, so check the booking conditions carefully. Pay particular attention to the security deposit, insurance excess, fuel and mileage policy, what equipment is included and the conditions for returning the scooter. Any compulsory charges should be identified before you confirm and pay for your booking.
