Considerations Before You Ride in Croatia
The licence you need depends on the scooter or motorcycle you hire. Croatian licence categories include AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles up to 125cc/11kW, A2 for motorcycles up to 35kW and A for larger motorcycles.
You must have a valid licence that entitles you to ride the category of vehicle you are hiring. A standard Category B car licence should not be assumed to cover a 125cc scooter or motorcycle in Croatia. Rental providers can also set their own age, licence and riding-experience requirements, so always check the requirements for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Possibly, but always check your rental agreement before taking a hired scooter or motorcycle on a ferry. Many Croatian vehicle ferries carry motorcycles, making it possible to travel between the mainland and islands, or between certain islands. However, not every ferry or high-speed service carries vehicles.
Your rental provider may also restrict where the vehicle can be taken or require prior permission for ferry travel. Taking a rental scooter outside its permitted area without authorisation could affect your rental agreement or insurance. Check both your rental conditions and the ferry route before travelling.

An approved and properly fastened protective helmet is compulsory for both riders and passengers on motorcycles and mopeds in Croatia. Riding without the required helmet may result in a fine. Croatian authorities also recommend wearing suitable protective clothing, including a jacket, trousers, gloves and protective footwear.
Whether a helmet or other riding equipment is supplied with a rental varies between providers and vehicles. Check exactly what is included before booking, particularly if you need a helmet for a passenger. Even when additional protective clothing is not legally required, wearing appropriate riding gear is strongly recommended.

Yes. Age requirements depend on the type of scooter or motorcycle and the rental provider. Under Croatian licensing rules, the minimum age is 15 for AM mopeds, 16 for A1 motorcycles up to 125cc/11kW, and 18 for A2 motorcycles. An unrestricted Category A licence is generally available from age 24, or from age 20 if you have held an A2 licence for at least two years.
However, being legally old enough and licensed to ride a particular vehicle does not automatically mean a rental company will hire it to you. Rental providers may impose a higher minimum age or require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period. If you’re visiting Croatia with a valid UK photocard driving licence, you do not normally need an International Driving Permit (IDP). GOV.UK confirms that a UK photocard licence can be used in Croatia without an IDP.
Different requirements may apply if you have a paper driving licence or a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. Rental providers may also have their own documentation requirements, so check these before booking.

Yes. In Croatia, traffic drives on the right, and you should obey posted speed limits and local road signs. Motorcycles and mopeds must use their dipped headlights during the daytime throughout the year, as well as at night.
Croatian authorities also advise riders to take particular care on bends and on road surfaces affected by sand, oil or other loose material, which can be especially hazardous on two wheels. Do not use a handheld mobile phone while riding, never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and avoid unsafe overtaking or weaving between traffic.

Some level of insurance will normally be included with a rental scooter or motorcycle, but the level of cover can vary between providers and vehicles. Basic cover may not protect you against all damage, theft or other costs.
Before booking, check exactly what insurance is included, together with any excess, exclusions and security deposit. Additional cover may sometimes be available if you want greater protection.
It’s also worth checking your own travel insurance, as riding a scooter or motorcycle may not automatically be covered, particularly if you do not hold the appropriate licence or are riding a larger-capacity vehicle.

There may be. Additional charges vary between rental providers and the vehicle you choose. Optional extras such as additional insurance, extra helmets, luggage, delivery or collection, additional riders and one-way rentals may cost extra.
You may also be asked for a refundable security deposit when collecting the scooter or motorcycle. This isn’t normally an additional rental fee, but an amount may be held on your payment card until the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
