Considerations Before You Ride in Macedonia
You’ll need a valid driving licence covering the scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. The required licence category depends on the vehicle’s engine size and power. For example, category A1 covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW, while larger motorcycles require the appropriate category.
Macedonia introduced new rules in May 2026 allowing certain category B licence holders to ride automatic motorcycles up to 125cc after completing mandatory training and obtaining certification. However, visitors should not assume their overseas car licence provides the same entitlement.
UK visitors can use a valid UK photocard licence, although an International Driving Permit may also be required. Always check that your licence covers your chosen vehicle and meets the rental company’s requirements.

Yes. Mopeds and lower-powered scooters are restricted from using motorways and expressways if they cannot reach the required minimum speed of 60 km/h. Always follow road signs and check whether your hired scooter is permitted on your planned route.
Some mountain roads, including routes through Galičica National Park near Lake Ohrid, may close seasonally or during severe weather. Forests and national parks can also be subject to temporary access restrictions during periods of high wildfire risk.
Before setting off, check local road conditions and any restrictions imposed by your rental company, particularly if you plan to explore mountain routes or remote areas.

Both riders and passengers must wear a protective helmet when travelling on a scooter, moped or motorcycle in Macedonia. This is a legal requirement, not simply a recommendation.
Although additional protective clothing is not generally mandatory, wearing a motorcycle jacket, gloves, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly when exploring mountain roads.
Helmets and other protective equipment may be supplied by the rental company, but availability and any additional charges vary. Always confirm what is included before booking and ensure your helmet fits correctly.

Yes. The legal minimum age depends on the type of scooter or motorcycle. In Macedonia, riders can obtain an AM or A1 licence from 16 years old, while the minimum age for an A2 licence is 18. For unrestricted motorcycles, category A is available from age 21 with sufficient previous riding experience, or 24 through direct access.
However, being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you can hire a scooter. Rental companies set their own minimum ages and may require you to have held your licence for a specified period.
Always check the age, licence and riding-experience requirements for your chosen scooter before booking.

If you hold a valid UK photocard driving licence, you can drive in Macedonia without an International Driving Permit (IDP) when hiring a vehicle. However, rental companies may have their own requirements, so check with your scooter hire supplier before travelling.
If you are riding your own vehicle or your circumstances require an IDP, you will need the 1968 version. You must obtain this before leaving the UK and carry it alongside your original driving licence.
Travellers from other countries should check the requirements applicable to their own driving licence.

Yes. Traffic drives on the right-hand side in Macedonia, and scooters and motorcycles must use dipped headlights during the day as well as at night. Always obey posted speed limits and traffic signs, particularly when travelling through towns and villages.
Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is prohibited, and drink-driving is a serious offence. The general alcohol limit is 0.05%, although stricter limits may apply to certain drivers. Never ride after drinking alcohol.
Road conditions and driving standards can vary, particularly on mountain routes around Ohrid and Matka Canyon. Take extra care on winding roads, and remember that some major roads have tolls. If you’re involved in an accident, do not move your vehicle until the police have recorded the incident and given permission.

Insurance may be included in your scooter hire, but the level of cover varies between rental companies and vehicles. Before booking, check whether the price includes third-party liability, accidental damage and theft protection, and whether an insurance excess or refundable security deposit applies.
If you plan to explore mountain roads around Skopje or Lake Ohrid, check for restrictions on unpaved roads. You should also confirm whether your insurance permits travel outside Macedonia.
Your personal travel insurance may not automatically cover scooter or motorcycle riding, so check your policy’s engine-size limits and licence requirements before travelling.

Additional charges may apply depending on the rental company and your chosen scooter. These can include extra helmets, additional riders, delivery or collection, insurance upgrades and late-return fees.
You may also need to pay a refundable security deposit. Check the fuel and mileage policies, as exceeding your allowance or returning the scooter without sufficient fuel could result in extra charges.
If you plan to travel beyond Macedonia, confirm whether cross-border travel is permitted and whether additional insurance or documentation fees apply.
Always review the full rental conditions before booking to avoid unexpected costs.
