Considerations Before You Ride in Latvia
You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. Latvia uses the standard European categories: AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc and 11kW, A2 for motorcycles up to 35kW, and A for larger motorcycles.
One useful Latvian difference is that a B-category licence also permits the holder to ride A1-category motorcycles in Latvia, while holders of any motor-vehicle driving entitlement may ride AM-category mopeds. However, a rental company can still impose its own licence requirements for a particular vehicle.
For UK visitors, a valid UK photocard driving licence can be used in Latvia without an International Driving Permit. Your licence must be carried with you, and rental companies may require a minimum period of driving experience or impose additional conditions.

Scooters and motorcycles can generally use Latvia’s public roads, provided there is no local restriction. Mopeds are limited to 45 km/h, so riders should choose roads appropriate for the vehicle and always follow signs restricting particular types of traffic.
There is one particularly important geographical restriction to be aware of. Access within 2km of Latvia’s border with Belarus is restricted, and some border roads and checkpoints may be closed or subject to restrictions at short notice. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to neighbouring Belarus.
Temporary road restrictions can also be introduced because of poor weather, road conditions or safety concerns, which is particularly relevant if travelling outside the main summer riding season.

A properly fastened motorcycle helmet is compulsory in Latvia when riding a moped, scooter or motorcycle. Passengers must also wear a fastened helmet.
Other protective equipment such as gloves, a riding jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly for longer journeys, although these items are not generally compulsory.
Whether helmets or other protective equipment are supplied depends on the individual rental company and vehicle. Check what is included before booking, especially if you need a passenger helmet or particular sizes.

Yes. Latvia’s minimum legal riding age depends on the vehicle and licence category. AM mopeds can be ridden from age 14, A1 motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc from 16, and A2 motorcycles from 18.
For larger A-category motorcycles, the normal minimum age is 24, although access is possible from age 20 if you have held an A2 licence for at least two years.
Being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you are old enough to hire. Rental companies may set higher minimum ages or require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period, so always check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking.
If you have a UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in Latvia. Your licence must still include the appropriate entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire.
If you hold an older UK paper driving licence, different requirements may apply and an IDP may be needed. Rental companies can also have their own documentation requirements, so check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before travelling.
Travellers with licences issued outside the UK should check the requirements that apply to their own licence before travelling.

Yes. In Latvia, traffic drives on the right, and riders must obey posted speed limits and local road signs. Scooters and motorcycles must also use dipped headlights or daytime running lights while riding.
Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is prohibited. Latvia also has strict drink-driving limits: the general limit is 0.5‰, reduced to 0.2‰ for drivers with less than two years’ experience. For moped riders, the limit is 0.5‰.
Take extra care on Latvia’s quieter rural roads, particularly in poor weather or after dark. If you have to stop at the roadside in darkness or poor visibility, Latvian rules require reflective clothing or a reflective vest when you are on the carriageway or shoulder.

Rental scooters in Latvia should have the compulsory third-party liability insurance required for vehicles used on Latvian roads. This covers liability for injury or damage caused to other people, but you should not assume it covers damage to the rental scooter itself.
Additional protection for accidental damage, theft or other losses, together with any excess you may have to pay, varies between rental companies and individual vehicles.
Check the insurance details carefully before booking so you understand what is included, what is excluded and what you could be liable to pay if the scooter is damaged or stolen.
There may be. Depending on the rental company and vehicle, you could pay extra for things such as additional helmets, an extra rider, delivery or collection, optional insurance cover or exceeding an agreed mileage allowance.
A security deposit may also be required when you collect the scooter. This is normally refundable provided the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
Check the booking details carefully before confirming so you know what is included, what is optional and what may be payable locally.
