Considerations Before You Ride in Lithuania
You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. Lithuania uses European licence categories: AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc and 11kW, A2 for motorcycles up to 35kW, and A for larger motorcycles.
For UK visitors, a valid UK photocard driving licence can be used in Lithuania without an International Driving Permit. Your licence must still include the appropriate entitlement for the vehicle you intend to ride.
Rental companies can set their own requirements, including minimum age, how long you have held your licence and which licence categories they accept. Always check the requirements for your chosen scooter before booking.

Scooters and motorcycles can generally use Lithuania’s public roads, although mopeds and slower scooters should not be taken onto motorways or other roads where their vehicle class or speed does not meet the required conditions. Always follow local signs, particularly around pedestrian areas and restricted streets in Vilnius.
Extra care is needed if travelling towards Lithuania’s eastern and south-western borders. Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region border Lithuania, and border crossings and restrictions can change. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel to both Belarus and Russia.
The Curonian Spit also continues south from Lithuania directly into Russia’s Kaliningrad region, so riders exploring the Lithuanian section should not simply continue beyond the international border.

A safety helmet is compulsory in Lithuania when riding a moped, scooter or motorcycle, and the requirement also applies to passengers.
Other protective equipment such as gloves, a riding jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly when riding outside Vilnius or on longer journeys, although these items are not generally compulsory.
Whether a helmet or other protective equipment is supplied depends on the individual rental company and vehicle. Check what is included before booking, especially if you need a passenger helmet or particular sizes.

Yes. The minimum legal riding age depends on the vehicle and licence category. AM mopeds and A1 motorcycles up to 125cc can be ridden from age 16, while the minimum age for an A2 motorcycle licence is 18.
For larger A-category motorcycles, access normally starts from age 20 after at least two years’ experience with an A2 licence, or from 24 without that previous experience.
Being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you are old enough to hire. Rental companies may set higher minimum ages or require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period, so always check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking.
If you have a UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in Lithuania. Your licence must still include the correct entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire.
If you have an older UK paper driving licence, different requirements may apply and an IDP may be needed. Rental companies can also set their own documentation requirements, so check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before travelling.
Travellers with licences issued outside the UK should check the requirements that apply to their own licence before travelling.

Yes. In Lithuania, traffic drives on the right, and scooters and motorcycles must follow posted speed limits and local road signs. Daytime running lights or dipped headlights must be used during the day as well as at night.
Lithuania has a zero-alcohol limit for moped and motorcycle riders, so do not drink any alcohol before riding. Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is also prohibited.
Take extra care on rural roads and when conditions are wet or cold. Lithuania’s winters can be severe, so weather and road conditions should always be considered before setting out.

Rental scooters in Lithuania should have the compulsory third-party liability insurance required for vehicles used on Lithuanian roads. This covers liability for injury or damage caused to other people, but you should not assume it covers damage to the rental scooter itself.
Additional protection for accidental damage, theft or other losses, together with any excess you may have to pay, varies between rental companies and individual vehicles.
Check the insurance details carefully before booking so you understand what is included, what is excluded and what you could be liable to pay if the scooter is damaged or stolen.
There may be. Depending on the rental company and vehicle, you could pay extra for things such as additional helmets, an extra rider, delivery or collection, optional insurance cover or exceeding an agreed mileage allowance.
A security deposit may also be required when you collect the scooter. This is normally refundable provided the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
Check the booking details carefully before confirming so you know what is included, what is optional and what may be payable locally.
