Considerations Before You Ride in Hungary

You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you want to hire. Hungary uses the familiar European licence categories: AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc and 11kW, with A2 or A required for more powerful motorcycles.

For UK visitors, a valid UK photocard driving licence can be used in Hungary, and you do not normally need an International Driving Permit. Your licence must still show the appropriate entitlement for the vehicle you intend to ride.

Rental companies can impose additional conditions, including minimum age, how long you have held your licence and which licence categories they accept. Always check the requirements for your chosen scooter or motorcycle before booking.

Scooters and motorcycles can generally use Hungary’s public roads, but motorways and expressways may only be used by vehicles capable of maintaining the required minimum speed. Mopeds and slower scooters should therefore stay off these roads.

In Budapest, pay particular attention to pedestrian zones, restricted-access streets and bus lanes, where access may be prohibited unless signs specifically allow motorcycles. Always follow local signs, temporary restrictions and traffic controls.

There are no general areas of Hungary that visitors are currently advised to avoid for travel-safety reasons, making the country straightforward to explore by scooter or motorcycle.

A properly fastened motorcycle helmet is required in Hungary when riding a scooter, moped or motorcycle. The requirement applies to both the rider and any passenger.

Other protective clothing such as gloves, a riding jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, although it is not generally mandatory riding equipment.

Whether helmets or other protective equipment are supplied depends on the individual rental company and vehicle. Check what is included before booking, particularly if you need a passenger helmet or specific sizes.

Yes. The minimum legal riding age depends on the type of scooter or motorcycle and the licence category required. AM and A1 categories start from age 16, while A2 starts from age 18. Access to larger A-category motorcycles depends on age and previous motorcycle experience.

However, being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you are old enough to hire. Rental companies can set higher minimum ages and may require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period.

Always check the age and licence requirements for your chosen vehicle before booking.

If you have a UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in Hungary. You must carry your licence with you and it must include the correct entitlement for the scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire.

If you still hold an older UK paper driving licence, you may need a 1968 IDP. Rental companies can also have their own documentation requirements, so check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before travelling.

Travellers with licences issued outside the UK should check the requirements that apply to their own licence before travelling.

Yes. In Hungary, traffic drives on the right, and riders must follow posted speed limits and local road signs. Dipped headlights are required during the daytime when riding outside built-up areas.

Hungary also has a zero-tolerance drink-driving policy, so you should not drink any alcohol before riding. Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is prohibited. Motorcycles and mopeds are permitted to use bus lanes, although you should always follow any local signs or restrictions.

Take particular care when riding in Budapest, where trams, busy junctions, pedestrians and heavy city traffic can make conditions more demanding than on quieter roads outside the capital.

Rental scooters in Hungary should have the compulsory third-party liability insurance required for vehicles used on Hungarian roads. This covers liability for injury or damage caused to other people, but you should not assume it covers damage to the rental scooter itself.

Additional protection for accidental damage, theft or other losses, along with any excess you may have to pay, varies between rental companies and individual vehicles.

Check the insurance details carefully before booking so you understand what is included, what is excluded and what you could be liable to pay if the scooter is damaged or stolen.

There may be. Depending on the rental company and vehicle, you could pay extra for things such as additional helmets, an extra rider, delivery or collection, optional insurance cover or exceeding an agreed mileage allowance.

A security deposit may also be required when you collect the scooter. This is normally refundable provided the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.

Check the booking details carefully before confirming so you know what is included, what is optional and what may be payable locally.
