Considerations Before You Ride in Armenia

You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. Under Armenian law, AM covers mopeds, A1 covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW, while A covers larger motorcycles. A standard B car category does not automatically include A1 or A motorcycle entitlement under Armenia’s licence-category rules.

If you’re visiting from the UK, you should also carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK driving licence. UK government guidance specifically states that both are required for driving in Armenia. An IDP does not replace your licence or give you additional motorcycle entitlement.

Rental companies may also impose their own minimum age, licence-history or vehicle-category requirements, so always check the conditions for your chosen scooter before booking.

Scooters and motorcycles can generally use Armenia’s public roads, although mopeds should not be ridden on motorways and local road signs or temporary restrictions must always be followed.

There are also important areas to avoid for wider travel-safety reasons. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all travel within 5km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan, and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The Armenia–Azerbaijan border remains closed.

Road conditions can be poor, particularly between November and February, and driving outside towns after dark is best avoided where possible because some roads are poorly maintained and inadequately lit.

A fastened motorcycle helmet is required by Armenian law when riding a motorcycle or scooter, and passengers must also wear a fastened helmet. Other protective clothing such as gloves, jackets, trousers and suitable footwear is strongly recommended.

Whether a helmet or other protective equipment is supplied depends on the individual rental company and vehicle. Check what’s included before booking, particularly if you need a passenger helmet or specific sizes.

Yes. Armenian law allows AM-category mopeds from age 16, while A1 motorcycles up to 125cc and A-category motorcycles require riders to be at least 18.

However, the minimum age for hiring can be higher than the legal riding age. Rental companies set their own age, licence and riding-experience requirements, which can also vary depending on the scooter or motorcycle. Always check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Yes. If you have a UK driving licence, you need a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as your UK licence to drive or ride in Armenia. The IDP must be obtained before travelling, as it cannot be purchased once you are in Armenia.

An IDP does not replace your driving licence or give you additional motorcycle entitlement. Your licence must still cover the category of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. Rental companies may also have their own documentation requirements, so check these before booking.

Travellers with licences issued outside the UK should check the requirements applying to their own licence before travelling.

Yes. In Armenia, traffic drives on the right, and riders must obey local speed limits and road signs. Motorcycle and scooter riders and their passengers must wear a fastened helmet, and using a handheld mobile phone while riding is prohibited.

Take particular care outside Yerevan and other towns. Road surfaces and lighting can be poor, especially during the winter months, and the UK Foreign Office recommends avoiding driving outside towns after dark where possible.

Remember that local driving styles and road conditions may be different from those you’re used to, so ride defensively, allow extra space and adjust your speed to the conditions.

Rental scooters in Armenia should have the compulsory third-party motor insurance required for vehicles used on Armenian roads. This primarily covers liability for injury or damage caused to other people; it should not be assumed to cover damage to the rental scooter itself.

Additional cover, excesses and damage or theft protection vary between rental companies and individual vehicles. Check the insurance details shown with your booking carefully, including what is covered, the excess payable and whether optional additional protection is available.

There may be. Depending on the rental company and vehicle, you could pay extra for things such as additional helmets, an extra rider, delivery or collection, optional insurance cover or exceeding an agreed mileage allowance.

A security deposit may also be required when you collect the scooter. This is normally refundable provided the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.

Check the booking details carefully before confirming so you know what is included, what is optional and what may be payable locally.
