Considerations Before You Ride in Serbia

To hire a scooter or motorcycle in Serbia, you’ll need a valid driving licence that permits you to ride your chosen vehicle. The requirements depend on the scooter’s engine size and power.

Visitors holding a valid UK photocard driving licence can ride in Serbia, provided they have the appropriate motorcycle entitlement. A standard UK car licence does not automatically qualify you to hire every type of scooter or motorcycle.

Rental companies may also have their own minimum age, riding-experience and documentation requirements. Always check that your licence is accepted for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Yes. Smaller scooters and mopeds are prohibited from using Serbian motorways and expressways. These roads are reserved for motorcycles and other permitted vehicles capable of reaching at least 50 km/h.

Belgrade also has pedestrian-only areas, including the famous Knez Mihailova shopping street, where ordinary scooter and motorcycle access is restricted.

If you’re planning to explore beyond Belgrade, take care on rural roads, where surfaces and conditions can vary. Always follow local road signs, check your planned route and confirm that your rental agreement permits your intended journey.

In Serbia, wearing an approved protective helmet is compulsory for both scooter and motorcycle riders and their passengers. Helmets must be securely fastened throughout the journey.

Although additional protective clothing is not generally required by law, wearing a motorcycle jacket, gloves, protective trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly when exploring Serbia’s countryside and winding rural roads.

Rental companies may include helmets in the hire price or charge an additional fee. Other protective equipment may not be available, so check what’s included before booking and ensure your helmet fits correctly.

Yes. In Serbia, the legal minimum age for riding smaller mopeds and scooters up to 125cc is 16, provided you hold the appropriate licence. Larger motorcycles have higher age and licensing requirements.

However, rental companies may set their own minimum age requirements, often starting at 18 or higher, depending on the vehicle. Some may also require you to have held your driving licence for a minimum period.

Always check the rental company’s age and licence requirements before booking, particularly if you’re planning to hire a larger scooter or motorcycle.

If you hold a valid UK photocard driving licence, you can ride a scooter or motorcycle in Serbia during short visits without an International Driving Permit (IDP), provided your licence covers your chosen vehicle.

However, carrying a 1968 IDP is recommended, as it can make your driving licence easier for Serbian police to recognise.

If you hold an older UK paper driving licence, you should obtain an IDP or exchange your licence for a photocard before travelling.

Rental companies may have their own documentation requirements, so always check before booking. Visitors from other countries should check the requirements applicable to their driving licences.

Yes. Traffic drives on the right-hand side in Serbia, and scooters and motorcycles must use their headlights or daytime running lights throughout the day.

Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on open roads, unless signs indicate otherwise. Serbia has strict drink-driving laws, so avoid alcohol entirely before riding. Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is also prohibited.

Take particular care when exploring beyond Belgrade. Rural roads can have uneven surfaces, sharp bends and changing conditions, particularly after bad weather. Always adjust your speed and remain alert.

If your journey includes Serbian motorways, remember that smaller scooters are prohibited and toll charges may apply to permitted motorcycles.
