Considerations Before You Ride in Germany

To hire a scooter or motorcycle in Germany, you’ll need a valid driving licence that permits you to ride your chosen vehicle. The requirements depend on the scooter’s engine size and power.

Visitors holding a valid UK photocard driving licence can ride in Germany without an International Driving Permit, provided they have the appropriate entitlement. A standard UK car licence does not automatically qualify you to hire larger scooters or motorcycles.

Rental companies may also have their own minimum age and riding-experience requirements. Always check that your licence is accepted for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Yes. Smaller scooters and mopeds are prohibited from using German motorways (Autobahns) and certain expressways. These roads are generally restricted to vehicles capable of exceeding 60 km/h. Larger scooters and motorcycles may use them if they meet this requirement.

Germany also has environmental zones in some cities. However, conventional scooters and motorcycles are generally exempt from the environmental sticker requirements.

Some historic city centres, pedestrian areas and forest roads have additional restrictions. Always follow local signs, and take particular care when exploring mountain roads in Bavaria or the Black Forest, where weather conditions and seasonal restrictions may affect your journey.

In Germany, wearing a suitable protective helmet is compulsory for scooter and motorcycle riders and their passengers.

Although additional protective clothing is not generally required by law, wearing a motorcycle jacket, gloves, protective trousers and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended, particularly when exploring Germany’s scenic countryside and winding mountain roads.

Rental companies may include helmets in the hire price or charge an additional fee. Other protective equipment may not be available, so check what’s included before booking and ensure your helmet fits correctly.

Yes. In Germany, the legal minimum age for riding smaller mopeds is 15, while scooters and motorcycles up to 125cc can be ridden from 16, provided you hold the appropriate licence. Larger motorcycles have higher age and licensing requirements.

However, rental companies may set their own minimum age requirements, often starting at 18 or higher, depending on the vehicle. Some may also require you to have held your driving licence for a minimum period.

Always check the rental company’s age and licence requirements before booking, particularly if you’re planning to hire a larger scooter or motorcycle.

If you hold a valid UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to hire and ride a scooter or motorcycle in Germany for visits of up to six months, provided your licence covers your chosen vehicle.

If you hold an older UK paper driving licence, you should exchange it for a photocard licence or obtain a 1968 IDP before travelling.

Rental companies may have their own documentation requirements, so always check before booking. Visitors from other countries should check the requirements applicable to their driving licences.

Yes. Traffic drives on the right-hand side in Germany, and scooters and motorcycles must use their headlights or daytime running lights at all times, including during daylight.

Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on open roads, unless signs indicate otherwise. Germany has strict drink-driving laws, so avoid alcohol entirely before riding. Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is also prohibited.

Take particular care when exploring Bavaria’s mountain roads or the winding routes of the Black Forest. Adjust your speed to suit changing weather and road conditions.

If your journey includes Germany’s famous Autobahns, remember that not all sections have unrestricted speeds. Smaller scooters are prohibited, and larger scooters must meet the minimum vehicle-speed requirements.

Insurance may be included in your scooter hire in Germany, but the level of cover varies between rental companies and vehicles. Before booking, check whether the price includes third-party liability, accidental damage and theft protection, and whether an insurance excess or refundable security deposit applies.

If you’re planning to explore Germany’s scenic countryside or mountain roads, check whether your insurance covers your intended routes. You should also confirm whether cross-border travel is permitted and whether additional insurance is required.

Your personal travel insurance may not automatically cover scooter or motorcycle riding, so check your policy’s engine-size limits and licence requirements before travelling.

Additional charges may apply when hiring a scooter or motorcycle in Germany, depending on the rental company and your chosen vehicle.

These may include refundable security deposits, additional insurance, helmet hire, extra mileage and charges for late returns. Always check what’s included in the advertised rental price before booking.

Germany’s motorways are generally toll-free for scooters and motorcycles. However, parking charges, traffic fines and additional fees for cross-border travel may apply. Check your rental agreement carefully to avoid unexpected costs.
