Considerations Before You Ride in Georgia
You’ll need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to hire. Georgian law classifies motorcycles under Category A, with A1 covering lighter motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW.
For UK visitors, current government guidance states that you can drive in Georgia using a valid UK driving licence for up to one year. However, individual rental companies may have their own licence requirements, so check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking.
If your licence does not clearly show the appropriate motorcycle entitlement, don’t assume that a standard car licence is sufficient simply because you are hiring a small scooter.

Yes. Mopeds are prohibited on Georgian motorways, so if you hire a smaller scooter classed as a moped, you’ll need to plan routes that avoid them. Larger motorcycles are not subject to that blanket motorway prohibition, although normal road signs and any local restrictions still apply.
There are also important regional restrictions. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office currently advises against all travel to the Russian-occupied regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel close to their administrative boundary lines. These boundaries can be poorly marked, so riders should not attempt to cross them.
Elsewhere, mountain roads can become difficult or impassable following heavy rain, flooding, snow or landslides, particularly in remote areas. Check local road and weather conditions before setting off into the mountains and make sure your rental agreement permits the type of road you intend to use.

A fastened motorcycle helmet is compulsory in Georgia for both the rider and passenger when travelling on a motorcycle or moped. Georgia’s road traffic legislation requires motorcycle and moped riders and their passengers to use an appropriate helmet, and riding without one can result in a fine.
Other protective clothing such as gloves, a riding jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear is sensible, particularly if you plan to explore Georgia’s mountain roads, where surfaces and conditions can vary considerably.
Helmets are commonly available with rental scooters and motorcycles, but exactly what is included can vary between suppliers. Check the individual rental offer before booking, particularly if you need a second helmet for a passenger or additional protective equipment.

Yes. The minimum legal age depends on the category of vehicle. Georgian law sets the minimum age at 16 for AM mopeds, 17 for A1 motorcycles, 18 for A2 motorcycles, and 21 or 24 for unrestricted Category A motorcycles, depending on the rider’s previous motorcycle entitlement.
However, being legally old enough to ride does not automatically mean you will be able to hire one. Rental companies can impose higher minimum ages and may also require you to have held the appropriate licence for a minimum period.
For that reason, check the age and licence requirements shown for your chosen scooter or motorcycle before booking, particularly if you are under 25 or hiring a larger-capacity motorcycle.

If you hold a valid UK driving licence, you can currently drive in Georgia for up to one year. However, if you are hiring a scooter or motorcycle, the UK government recommends checking with the rental company before travelling, as individual suppliers may require a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) even when your UK licence is legally acceptable.
UK government IDP guidance specifically lists Georgia as requiring a 1968 IDP for stays longer than 90 days. For shorter holidays, it can still be worth carrying one if your rental company requests it.
An IDP does not replace your driving licence, so you should carry your original licence as well.

Yes. Georgia drives on the right-hand side of the road, and riders should pay particular attention to local speed limits. Under Georgian traffic law, the general limit is 60 km/h in built-up areas and 20 km/h in residential areas. Category A motorcycles are generally limited to 80 km/h outside built-up areas, while mopeds are limited to 45 km/h wherever they are permitted. Always follow lower posted limits where applicable.
Avoid alcohol completely when riding. UK government travel advice warns that Georgia has a lower drink-driving limit than the UK and that penalties can be severe. Using a mobile communication device while driving is also an offence.
Take extra care outside the cities. Roads can be poorly lit or in variable condition, livestock may wander onto the road, and heavy rain, snow, flooding and landslides can make mountain routes difficult or impassable.

Insurance arrangements vary between rental companies and vehicles, so don’t assume every scooter or motorcycle comes with the same level of cover. Check the individual rental terms before booking to see exactly what is included.
Pay particular attention to third-party liability, damage to the rental vehicle, theft cover, the excess and any security deposit. Optional additional cover may sometimes be available to reduce your financial liability.
Georgia does have compulsory third-party liability insurance legislation for certain vehicles, including motorcycles, but the specific Georgian compulsory scheme for foreign-registered vehicles is separate from the insurance provided with a locally rented scooter or motorcycle.
It’s also worth checking your travel insurance, as some policies exclude riding motorcycles or scooters, restrict engine sizes, or require you to hold the appropriate motorcycle licence.
Possibly. The price shown at booking may not cover every optional extra, so check the rental conditions carefully before confirming your scooter or motorcycle.
Depending on the supplier, additional charges could apply for things such as extra helmets, additional riders, one-way rentals, delivery or collection, late returns, fuel, optional insurance upgrades or exceeding an included mileage allowance. A refundable security deposit may also be required when you collect the vehicle.
If you’re planning to take the bike onto unpaved or mountain roads, check the rental agreement first. Some suppliers may restrict where the vehicle can be ridden, and damage caused while using prohibited roads may not be covered by the rental insurance.
The safest approach is to check the total price, deposit, mileage allowance, fuel policy and optional extras before booking, then confirm any remaining charges when collecting the vehicle.
