Considerations Before You Ride in Italy
The licence you need depends on the scooter or motorcycle you hire. Italian licence categories include AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles up to 125cc/11kW, A2 for motorcycles up to 35kW and A for larger motorcycles.
BikesBooking states that in Italy some 125cc scooters can be rented with a category B car licence held for at least three years, but individual rental-company requirements can differ. Always check the licence category shown against the particular vehicle before booking.

Don’t assume that you can. Whether a rented scooter or motorcycle may be taken on a ferry to Sicily, Sardinia or another Italian island depends primarily on the rental company’s terms and the ferry operator’s requirements.
Taking the vehicle outside its permitted rental area without authorisation could breach the rental agreement or affect insurance cover. If island-hopping is part of your trip, tell the rental company before booking and obtain permission where required.

An approved protective helmet is compulsory for riders and passengers on motorcycles and mopeds in Italy (with limited exceptions for certain enclosed vehicles).
Helmet provision varies by rental company and vehicle. BikesBooking listings frequently include a helmet or offer helmets and other riding equipment as extras, so check exactly what is included with your chosen rental before booking. Jackets, gloves and other protective riding equipment may also be available as optional extras.

Yes. Minimum age requirements can vary depending on the type and power of the scooter or motorcycle, the licence required and the individual rental provider’s conditions.
Don’t assume that being legally entitled to ride a particular vehicle automatically means every rental company will hire it to you. Check the minimum driver age and licence requirements shown for your chosen vehicle before booking.
If you’re visiting from the UK with a valid UK photocard driving licence, you normally do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Italy. UK government guidance currently confirms this.
Different rules can apply to paper licences and licences issued in some Crown Dependencies, and rental companies can impose additional requirements. If an IDP is required for Italy, the relevant convention permit is the 1968 IDP. Check both the official guidance and your rental provider before travelling.

Yes. Helmets are compulsory on motorcycles and mopeds, and motorcycles must use their lights during the day. Italy’s standard drink-drive limit is 0.5 mg/ml, with a zero limit applying to some drivers. Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is prohibited.
Also watch carefully for ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) signs in historic city centres. These restricted traffic zones are often camera-controlled and entering one without authorisation can result in a fine.

Insurance arrangements vary depending on the vehicle and rental provider. Basic third-party cover may be included, while cover for damage, theft or other risks can differ between rentals or be available as an optional extra.
Before booking, check the insurance included with your chosen scooter or motorcycle, particularly any excess, exclusions and security-deposit requirements.
Additional costs depend on the rental provider and the vehicle selected. Optional extras such as additional insurance, helmets or riding equipment, luggage, delivery or one-way rental may carry an extra charge.
A refundable security deposit may also be required when you collect the vehicle. This isn’t normally an additional rental fee, but funds may be held until the scooter or motorcycle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
Check the price, included equipment, optional extras and deposit requirements shown for your chosen rental before booking.
