Considerations Before You Ride in Cyprus
You need a valid driving licence that covers the type of scooter or motorcycle you intend to ride. Cyprus uses the familiar European motorcycle categories, including AM for mopeds, A1 for light motorcycles, A2 and A for progressively larger motorcycles. The Cyprus Road Transport Department confirms, for example, that an A1 licence also covers AM, while A2 covers A1 and AM.
For UK visitors, a UK photocard driving licence can be used in Cyprus, but having a car licence does not automatically mean you are entitled to ride every size of scooter or motorcycle. Check the motorcycle categories shown on your licence and make sure they cover the vehicle you intend to hire.
Rental companies can also impose their own licence, age and driving-experience requirements, so always check the conditions for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Cyprus is a single main island rather than an island-hopping destination. There isn’t a network of domestic vehicle ferries connecting Cypriot holiday islands, so you generally won’t need to take your rental scooter on a ferry while exploring Cyprus.
There is a seasonal passenger ferry between Cyprus and mainland Greece, and the service can carry motorcycles and other accompanied vehicles. The Cyprus Government confirms that the maritime link is operating in 2026 and is scheduled to continue under the current arrangement through 2027.
However, don’t assume a rental scooter can be taken off Cyprus. Rental agreements may restrict taking the vehicle on ferries or outside the country, and insurance may not remain valid. Always obtain permission from the rental provider before attempting to take a hired scooter or motorcycle on any international ferry.

In Cyprus, both the rider and passenger of a scooter, moped or motorcycle must wear an approved protective helmet. Cyprus road-safety information confirms that riding without a helmet is an offence, so you may be liable to a fine and penalty points if you ride without one.
For ordinary leisure riders, items such as protective jackets, trousers, gloves and suitable closed footwear are strongly recommended, even though the additional protective-equipment requirements introduced in 2026 specifically apply to professional motorcycle riders working in delivery, courier and postal services. Cyprus Police’s BikeSafe programme also promotes helmets, jackets, trousers, gloves and suitable footwear as motorcycle safety equipment.
Official Cyprus visitor guidance states that rental agencies should supply helmets on request, but don’t assume that other protective clothing will be included. Check what equipment your rental provider supplies before booking, particularly if you would like gloves, a jacket or other riding gear.

Yes. Age requirements depend on the type of scooter or motorcycle and the individual rental provider. Cyprus has different licence categories for mopeds and motorcycles, each with its own minimum-age and licensing requirements.
For example, the normal A1 motorcycle licence covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW and has a minimum licensing age of 18 in Cyprus. Larger motorcycles require the appropriate higher-category licence.
Being legally entitled to ride a particular vehicle does not automatically mean a rental company will hire it to you. Providers may impose a higher minimum age or require you to have held the appropriate licence for a certain period. Always check the age and licence requirements for your chosen scooter or motorcycle before booking.

If you’re visiting Cyprus with a valid UK photocard driving licence, you can currently use it for up to 30 days without an International Driving Permit (IDP).
If you’re staying longer, have a paper UK driving licence, or hold a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, different requirements may apply. If an IDP is required for Cyprus, GOV.UK currently lists the 1949 IDP. Rental providers may also have their own documentation requirements, so check these before booking.

Yes. In Cyprus, traffic drives on the left, which will be familiar to UK visitors. Motorcycles and mopeds must also use their headlights during daylight hours, not just at night.
Using a handheld mobile phone or other object while riding is prohibited, and riders must observe posted speed limits. Cyprus also applies a lower alcohol limit to motorcycle riders than to ordinary drivers, so the safest approach is not to drink at all if you’re riding.
Remember that mopeds are not permitted on Cyprus’s motorways, so check your route if you’re hiring a smaller-capacity scooter.

Some level of insurance will normally be included with a rental scooter or motorcycle, but the level of cover can vary between providers and vehicles. Basic cover may not protect you against all damage, theft or other costs.
Before booking, check exactly what insurance is included, together with any excess, exclusions and security deposit. Additional cover may sometimes be available if you want greater protection.
It’s also worth checking your own travel insurance, as riding a scooter or motorcycle may not automatically be covered, particularly if you don’t hold the appropriate licence or are riding a larger-capacity vehicle.

There may be. Additional charges vary between rental providers and the vehicle you choose. Optional extras such as additional insurance, extra helmets, luggage, delivery or collection, additional riders and one-way rentals may cost extra.
You may also be asked for a refundable security deposit when collecting the scooter or motorcycle. This isn’t normally an additional rental fee, but an amount may be held on your payment card until the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
