Considerations Before You Ride in Portugal
The licence you need depends on the scooter or motorcycle you want to hire. Portuguese licence categories include AM for mopeds, A1 for motorcycles up to 125cc/11kW, A2 for motorcycles up to 35kW and A for larger motorcycles.
In Portugal, holders of a valid Category B car licence can also ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW if they are aged 25 or over. Different conditions apply to younger riders.
Remember that a rental company can also set its own minimum age, licence and experience requirements, so always check the requirements for your chosen vehicle before booking.

Possibly, but always check with the rental company before taking a hired scooter or motorcycle on a ferry. Some Portuguese island ferry services carry motorcycles and scooters, but this does not automatically mean your rental agreement allows you to take the vehicle to another island.
In the Azores, vehicle-carrying ferries operate on a number of inter-island routes and motorcycles can be transported, subject to availability and the ferry operator’s requirements. Similar vehicle ferry services operate between Madeira and Porto Santo. Your rental provider may restrict where the vehicle can be taken or require prior permission, and taking it off the agreed island without authorisation could affect your rental agreement or insurance.

An approved protective helmet is compulsory for both riders and passengers on scooters, mopeds and motorcycles in Portugal. The helmet must be correctly fitted and securely fastened. Riding without the required safety equipment may leave you liable to a fine.
Motorcycle jackets, gloves, protective trousers and boots are strongly recommended for safer riding, but are not generally compulsory under Portuguese road law. Whether helmets or other protective equipment are supplied with a rental varies between providers, so check exactly what is included with your chosen scooter or motorcycle before booking.

Yes. Age requirements depend on the type of scooter or motorcycle and the rental provider. Under Portuguese licensing rules, an A1 licence can be held from age 16, A2 from 18, and an unrestricted Category A licence from age 24 — or from age 20 if the rider has held A2 entitlement for at least two years.
However, being legally entitled to ride a vehicle does not automatically mean a rental company will hire it to you. Providers may set a higher minimum age or require you to have held the relevant licence for a minimum period. Always check the age and licence requirements for your chosen scooter or motorcycle before booking.

If you’re visiting Portugal with a valid UK photocard driving licence, you do not normally need an International Driving Permit (IDP). You should carry your driving licence with you when riding.
Different requirements may apply if you have a paper driving licence, a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man, or a licence issued outside the UK. Rental providers may also have their own documentation requirements, so check these before booking.

Yes. In Portugal, traffic drives on the right, and vehicles already on a roundabout have priority. Motorcycles and scooters must also use their dipped headlights while riding, including during daylight hours.
Using a handheld mobile phone while riding is prohibited, and drink-driving limits apply. Pay attention to posted speed limits and local signs, particularly in towns and villages where limits may be lower. Serious road offences may leave you liable to a fine or other penalties.

Some level of insurance will normally be included with a rental scooter or motorcycle, but the level of cover can vary considerably between providers and vehicles. Basic cover may not protect you against all damage, theft or other costs.
Before booking, check exactly what insurance is included, along with any excess, exclusions and security deposit. Additional cover may sometimes be available if you want greater protection.
It’s also worth checking your own travel insurance, as riding a scooter or motorcycle may not automatically be covered, particularly if you do not hold the appropriate licence or are riding a larger-capacity vehicle.

There may be. Additional charges vary between rental providers and the vehicle you choose. Optional extras such as additional insurance, extra helmets, luggage, delivery or collection, additional riders and one-way rentals may cost extra.
You may also be asked for a refundable security deposit when collecting the scooter or motorcycle. This isn’t normally an additional rental fee, but an amount may be held on your payment card until the vehicle is returned in accordance with the rental conditions.
